The project is a joint venture between Hamburger Hochbahn AG, EvoBus GmbH and Daimler AG. In addition, the Fahrzeugwerkstätten Falkenried GmbH are engaged in the technical supervision of the vehicles, and hySOLUTIONS GmbH in carrying out and launching the project.
Practical testing of the fuel cell-hybrid buses receives financial backing as part of NIP , the "Nationales Innovationsprogramm Wasserstoff- und Brennstoffzellentechnologie" or National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. The Federal Ministries of Transport, Building and Urban Development, Research, Economics and Labour set up the programme jointly with the Federal Ministry of the Environment, with the aim of putting hydrogen and fuel cell technology to thorough testing. In separate projects, products and applications based on these technologies are being systematically tested on their suitability and reliability in everyday running; at the same time, the way is being prepared for the commercial use of such technologies in the future.
NOW (the "Nationale Organisation Wasserstoff- und Brennstoffzellentechnologie GmbH", the National Organisation for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology) is responsible for controlling the project as a whole.
At national level, the programme is closely linked to other activities in sectors related to fuel cell propulsion and hydrogen infrastructure. It is an integral part of CEP (Clean Energy Partnership), for instance, a union made up of numerous industrial companies, working jointly to demonstrate the everyday suitability of hydrogen as a source of energy for vehicles, and to test and set up the infrastructure for fuelling them.
Furthermore, the experience and results of this project are to flow into another EU venture: CHIC (Clean Hydrogen in European Cities). This programme aims to expand the use of fuel cell buses in European cities and regions.
