HOCHBAHN takes delivery of its first fuel cell-hybrid bus

It's here at last: at 2.15 p.m. HOCHBAHN parked its first fuel cell-hybrid bus on Hamburg's Fish Market for the official handover ceremony. The emission-free SauberBus glided silently into its own special parking bay – fittingly of fresh green turf. On board were the City's First Mayor, Olaf Scholz, the Ministry of Transport's Undersecretary of State, Rainer Bomba, the Head of Daimler Buses & CEO EvoBus GmbH, Hartmut Schick, and the Chairman of HOCHBAHN's Management Board, Günter Elste.

Also on board were journalists – and Class 4b of the Moorflage Environmental School. As the SauberBus is a next-generation bus, the children had the privilege of representing their own age group on their own bus's first-ever trip.

At the Fish Market, HOCHBAHN, in co-operation with Hamburg's Omnibus Association, had buses on show from the past sixty years. Ongoing bus development was depicted in an impressive parade of generations. And progress is still in process. HOCHBAHN's Management Board Chairman, Günter Elste, stated: "The forecast is that, in twenty to twenty-five years, mineral oil – and therefore diesel – will be too scarce and expensive to propel buses. HOCHBAHN therefore aims to run only emission-free, electric propelled buses in the decades to come. Taking this new generation of buses into service is therefore an important step along the road to electro-mobility."

Experience the SauberBus yourself – it will soon be running on HOCHBAHN bus routes. Coming shortly: more information here on the bus routes it will service and on a variety of SauberBus promotions.
